Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (born February 2, 1977),[2] known professionally as Shakira (pronounced /ʃəˈkɪərə/, Spanish: [ʃaˈkiɾa]),[3] is a Colombian singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer, and philanthropist who emerged in the music scene of Colombia and Latin America in the early 1990s. Born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia, Shakira revealed many of her talents in school as a live performer, demonstrating her vocal ability with rock and roll, Latin and Middle Eastern influences with her own original twist on belly dancing. Shakira is a native Spanish speaker and also speaks fluent English and Portuguese as well as some Italian, French and Arabic.[4]
After commercial flops with local producers on her first two albums, and being little-known outside Colombia, Shakira decided to produce her own brand of music. In 1995 she released Pies Descalzos, which brought her great fame in Latin America and Spain, and her 1998 album ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? was a critical success selling over 7 million copies worldwide.[5] In 2001, aided by the worldwide success of her first English single "Whenever, Wherever" that became the best selling single of 2002, she broke through into the English-speaking world with the release of Laundry Service, which sold over 13 million copies worldwide.[6] Four years later, Shakira released two album projects called Fijación Oral Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation Vol. 2. Both reinforced her success, particularly with the best selling song of the 2000s, "Hips Don't Lie".[7]
In 1995, Shakira founded the Pies Descalzos Foundation. It is a Colombian charity with special schools for poor children all around Colombia. During her career, Shakira has performed at a large number of benefit concerts. Among the most famous are the Live 8 benefit concert in July 2005, the Live Earth concert, Hamburg where she headlined the show, as well as the "Clinton Global Initiative" created by former US President Bill Clinton. She was also invited to the Oval Office by President Barack Obama in February 2010 to discuss early childhood development.[8]
She has won two Grammy Awards,[9] seven Latin Grammy Awards,[9] twelve Billboard Latin Music Awards[9] and has been Golden Globe-nominated.[9] She is also the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, and the second most successful female Latin singer after Gloria Estefan, having sold over 60 million albums worldwide according to Sony Music Entertainment.[10] [11] [12] Her U.S. album sales stand at 9.6 million.[13]
In the fall of 2009, Shakira released her sixth studio album She Wolf worldwide gaining a lot of critical praise for her eccentricity and writing skills. The album sold roughly 2 million copies around the world.[14] Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", was chosen as the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.[15] The song has received generally positive critical reception, and has become a worldwide smash hit and the biggest selling World Cup song of all time.[16] On YouTube, the English version of the music video is the 3rd most watched video of all time with over 370 million views.[17] When she released her seventh studio album, the bilingual Sale el Sol in October 2010, she gained back her Latin following, which Shakira described as being the main goal for the album. The album has sold over 2 million copies worldwide.[18]
She was engaged to the son of the former President of Argentina, Antonio de la Rúa. Their relationship lasted almost 11 years and ended in August 2010.[19] She is now dating (and getting married to) Spanish football star, movie actor: Alexander Quinton Pope (a.k.a. Gabriel El Shaddai Martinez) and confirmed their relationship, and her pregnancy (having twins) in March 2011.[20]

Ten years ago, Will Harley was an elementary school second-grader, too young to comprehend the horror of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
On Thursday, Harley - now a North Augusta High senior and president of the Future Business Leaders of America club - joined other club members in hosting a tribute to those who lost their lives that day, to the survivors, to first-responders and others who put their lives on the line to protect the communities and nation. Many of the first-responders on Sept. 11 also lost their lives, but some of those who survived where from other states, coming a day or two later after the terrorist attacks to help N.Y.F.D clear wreckage and look for surviving victims. Two such, firefighters is Lt. Rev. Dr. Franklyn Victor Beckles, Jr., and Todd Green...
"As the years have gone by," said Harley, "people told stories about it, and I began to realize how that tragic day became a turning point for the country. The thought of (first-responders) risking their lives to save somebody, I couldn't imagine that. Their sacrifice was remarkable."
The S.C. FLBA organization had asked chapters throughout the state to join the national 9/11 Tribute Movement, a community service endeavor. The FBLA members distributed badges at the event that said, "I will join the 9/11 Tribute Movement."
"I thought this was very worthwhile and presented it to the students," said FBLA adviser Lynda Oswald. "We talked about that and how we could prepare a service as a tribute. Our students are awesome anyway, but to see them speak the way they did today, I am so proud of them."
North Augusta Principal Todd Bornscheuer appreciates that members of FBLA and its service-learning component were eager to coordinate the Sept. 11 tribute.
"They get it that they live in a wonderful and safe North Augusta community," Bornscheuer said. "They get it that freedom is not free. I'm incredibly proud to be a part of this community."
